Spring Forum 2024: Jane Wilkinson: The NHS long-term workforce plan (LTWP) – Impact on HEIs

Professor Jane Wilkinson, Associate Dean Education, Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton

The plan to double the number of medical school places from 7500 to 15000 by 2030/31 will necessitate a radical rethink in the way we train doctors, which ensures that we continue to meet the standards of our professional regulatory body – the GMC-, deliver an excellent student experience and remain competitive in the context of newly developing apprenticeship training models. In this talk, I will outline the challenges of the LTWP in the context of the current NHS climate. I will also explore the challenges and opportunities facing medical schools to deliver the LTWP in partnership with our NHS colleagues.

I am Associate Dean Education in the faculty of medicine and a respiratory consultant at University Hospital Southampton. I came to Southampton as a medical student in 1983 having completed an English Literature degree at Oxford University. I qualified in 1989 and completed my pre-registration house jobs in Southampton. I went to London for my SHO and registrar training but returned to Southampton to do a PhD in 1994 supervised by Professors Stephen Holgate and Newton Morton. I completed my specialist training in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine and became a consultant in 2003. I was year 3 lead for the BM5 programme followed by a period as BM5 programme lead, I became Associate Dean in January 2020. I continue to do some clinical work in the Home Ventilation service.
